PONCHATOULA — The Ponchatoula Police Department says a 19‑year‑old has been banned from the upcoming Strawberry Festival and had multiple electronic devices seized as part of an ongoing investigation into alleged online threats shared on TikTok.
The person of interest, Amari Sexton, had a search conducted at their home after detectives received a tip that included a TikTok video showing a subject dancing to rap lyrics with a caption referencing the Strawberry Festival.
The video, which has drawn more than 90,000 views, prompted concern from community members and festival attendees. Officials say “numerous people have expressed concern that the song lyrics and hand gestures might be a threat.”
According to Ponchatoula Police Chief Bry Layrisson, Sexton is not currently under arrest. However, police consider them a person of interest in an active investigation related to alleged threats against the event.
Chief Layrisson noted that this is just one of three possible threats reported to the police department. He said the department has received hundreds of complaints about social media videos that officials believe could pose a risk to public safety.
The police department says it is taking every report seriously, particularly in light of a shooting that occurred in the area last year. Officials emphasized that they are being vigilant in monitoring potential threats and taking precautionary steps to ensure the safety of festivalgoers.
Investigators have not released additional details on the possible threats or whether any charges are expected at this time. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities review the evidence and seek to address public concerns ahead of the Strawberry Festival.
