Air travel is getting more expensive as major airlines begin raising baggage fees. United Airlines has announced an increase in checked bag charges, becoming the second airline this week to do so after JetBlue.
Why Are Prices Increasing
The main reason behind the hike is a sharp rise in jet fuel costs. Fuel prices have surged by around 80 percent following tensions linked to the Iran-Israel conflict. The situation worsened after Iran restricted access through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global oil supply. This has increased operating costs for airlines worldwide.
United Airlines New Baggage Fees
United Airlines will increase fees for flights across the United States, Mexico, Canada, and Latin America. Passengers will now pay higher charges depending on when they check their bags. The first checked bag will cost more if paid closer to departure, and the second bag will also see a noticeable increase. These changes apply to tickets purchased from April 3 onward.
JetBlue’s Earlier Price Hike
Earlier in the week, JetBlue introduced its own baggage fee increases. Prices now vary based on travel dates, with higher charges during peak periods. This makes it more expensive for passengers traveling during busy seasons.
Industry-Wide Trend
Other airlines have also been adjusting their pricing. American Airlines increased fees for second checked bags earlier this year. Meanwhile, Southwest Airlines, which long allowed free checked bags, began charging for them last year for the first time in its history.
What It Means for Travelers
Passengers should expect higher travel costs, especially if they check multiple bags or book last-minute. Paying baggage fees in advance may help reduce costs slightly, but overall expenses are rising across the industry.
