Marcelino “Mashico” Abad Tolentino, a man who spent his entire life in a remote village in Peru, has died peacefully in his sleep. Standing just 4 feet 2 inches tall, Mashico was believed to be one of the oldest people in the world, reportedly reaching the remarkable age of 125 years and 360 days.
Late Recognition and First Identity
Mashico’s existence came to official attention only during the Covid-19 pandemic. The Peruvian government discovered him while expanding its pension program, issuing him his first-ever ID card at around 120 years old. Shortly after, he began receiving a state pension and gained national recognition.
A Life Marked by Hardship
Born on April 5, 1900, according to his own account, Mashico never had a birth certificate, and his age was never verified by Guinness World Records.
He was orphaned at just seven years old when his parents died attempting to cross a river. Growing up in extreme poverty in the Chaglla District, he never attended school due to the long distance. Instead, he worked from a young age, farming, raising animals, and selling produce.
A Lifetime of Labor
Mashico spent his entire life working in the countryside, dividing his time between bricklaying and farming. Despite his long life, he never married or had children.
In his later years, an accident left him with a serious hip injury, requiring him to use a wheelchair.
Secrets to Longevity
Mashico credited his long life to a simple, natural lifestyle. His diet included plenty of fruit, lamb, and herbs, many of which he gathered himself. He also regularly chewed coca leaves, a common practice in the region to boost energy during physical labor.
In 2024, the Peruvian government attributed his longevity to a peaceful life surrounded by nature, highlighting his “healthy way of life and inner peace.”
How He Compares Globally
While Mashico’s age was never officially confirmed, records show that the oldest man ever verified was Juan Vicente Pérez Mora, who lived to 114 years and 311 days.
Currently, the oldest known living man is João Marinho Neto at 113, while the oldest living person is Ethel Caterham at 116.
