A Tennessee man is facing criminal charges after his 6-year-old son died following a tragic shooting inside their home.

According to the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department, Steven Lamont Phillips has been charged with criminal homicide in connection with the child’s death.

What Police Say Happened

Authorities said the incident occurred on March 28. Phillips allegedly told investigators he had been playing with his son in the living room before falling asleep with a pistol in his pocket.

He later woke to the sound of a gunshot and discovered his son critically injured. A family member called 911, and responding officers found the firearm on the living room floor.

Child Dies From Injuries

The boy was rushed to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in extremely critical condition with a head wound.

He died two days later, on March 30.

Additional Charges and Background

Phillips was initially booked on charges of aggravated child neglect and unlawful gun possession before the charge was upgraded to criminal homicide.

Police noted that he has prior felony convictions, including attempted theft, aggravated robbery, and gun-related offenses.

Family Remembers “Junebug”

In a statement, the child’s family described him as a joyful and loving boy, affectionately known as “Junebug.”

They remembered his bright smile, kind heart, and love for simple things like dinosaurs, noodles, and spending time with family.

Investigation Ongoing

Officials have not confirmed whether Phillips has entered a plea. The case remains under review, and a future court date has not yet been announced.
