A 44-year-old Brooklyn nurse was tragically struck and killed by an ambulance on her way to work Thursday, authorities and her family confirmed.
Incident Details
The incident occurred in the Midwood neighborhood when an ambulance, operated by Maimonides Medical Center Ocean Avenue and hit Cherry Cayetano Sobel. The driver of the ambulance did not stop after the collision, according to the New York Police Department.
Victim’s Background
Cayetano Sobel, a registered nurse, was on her regular route to work when the accident happened. Her husband, Jeff Sobel, described her as “a very well-regarded registered nurse” and expressed shock over her sudden death. He said she was “happy” when she left for work and took that route frequently. The couple married in 2020 and shared two young children, aged 5 and 3.
Response to the Incident
The ambulance crew involved in the incident has been suspended pending the outcome of the NYPD investigation. Maimonides Medical Center expressed their condolences, stating, “The Maimonides family is devastated by this tragic loss” and sent their “heartfelt” sympathy to the victim’s family and friends.
The police believe that the driver of the ambulance did not realize they had hit someone, and no criminal charges have been filed as of yet.

In a statement, Jeff Sobel said he is “holding it together for the children” and trying to find a way forward following his wife’s unexpected death. Friends and family have expressed their grief over the loss of Cayetano Sobel, who had a strong reputation in her nursing community.
