In a heartbreaking tragedy, an 11-year-old boy from Centennial, Colorado has been charged with first-degree murder after allegedly killing his 5-year-old brother, Elias Reliford, while the young child was peacefully napping at home on March 10.
The Tragic Incident
According to authorities and family members, the two brothers had returned home from school that afternoon when the older sibling was asked to do chores while Elias napped. The family’s great-aunt, Dawn Myles, revealed that the incident occurred during this time, although specific details about how Elias was killed have not been released by authorities, as both children are minors.
Myles described the event as “the most horrendous act that a human could commit on another human, especially a child.” She expressed disbelief, saying, “We would have never imagined the big brother that he was would hurt Elias.” The family, still in shock, has chosen not to discuss the case further while they process their grief.
Siblings Who Were Inseparable
The siblings were reportedly inseparable, often playing together and riding around their neighborhood. Myles shared that Elias was a happy child, who loved being outdoors and had a particular fondness for fire trucks and playing pranks. “If you saw one brother, you saw the other one,” Myles said. Elias was described as outgoing, with a love for life and a strong connection to his family.
Family’s Devastation and Loss
In the wake of this tragedy, Reliford’s family has been forced to leave their Centennial home. They are currently staying in hotels as they search for a permanent living situation. The 12-year-old sibling of the two boys has been sent to stay with relatives in Louisiana, as reported by WTSP.
Myles described the emotional turmoil the family is experiencing, saying, “The family is not well. There’s anger, there’s questions … there’s two losses here, you know, two brothers.”
Legal Proceedings
The 11-year-old boy has been held at the Marvin W. Foote Youth Services Center following his arrest, according to the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office. He is facing first-degree murder charges in connection with the tragic death of his younger brother.
Remembering Elias Reliford
Myles hopes that Elias will be remembered for his joy and innocence as a young child, saying, “I would want to see him smile, ride his scooter. He was a happy kindergartener. He was a happy kid.”
