I am sick to my stomach' Lawmakers call for the 25th Amendment as President Trump escalates Iran threat

A number of congressional Democrats raised alarms and demanded action on Tuesday after President Donald Trump issued a serious threat against Iran, warning that the country could face catastrophic consequences if it did not meet his negotiation deadline.

Trump’s Escalating Threats

Trump took to his Truth Social platform, making a stark statement: “If Iran does not meet my negotiation deadline by 8 p.m. ET, a whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again.

I don’t want that to happen, but it probably will.” His comments were seen as an extreme escalation, prompting several lawmakers to push for the invocation of the 25th Amendment, which would remove the president from office and transfer his powers to Vice President JD Vance.

Democratic Lawmakers React

Lawmakers from across the Democratic Party quickly condemned Trump’s rhetoric and called for immediate action. Rep. Sydney Kamlager-Dove (D-CA) expressed her outrage on social media, saying, “I’m sick to my stomach.

The fate of millions of innocent civilians now depends on the whims of a sick and demented man. This is pure evil. Republicans, if there were ever a time to stand up, it’s now. We must invoke the 25th Amendment before it’s too late.”

Rep. Yassamin Ansari (D-AZ) followed suit, stating, “Trump is escalating a devastating, illegal war, threatening massive war crimes and targeting civilian infrastructure in Iran. In the last 48 hours alone, the rhetoric has crossed every line. Pete Hegseth is complicit. I’ve called for the 25th Amendment and am introducing Articles of Impeachment against Hegseth.”

Calls for Action to Prevent War Crimes

Several other Democratic representatives joined in, echoing calls for Trump’s removal from office. Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) tweeted, “After bombing a school and massacring young girls, the war criminal in the White House is threatening genocide. It’s time to invoke the 25th Amendment. This maniac should be removed from office.”

Sen. Ed Markey (D-MA) also weighed in, saying, “Donald Trump must be removed from office. Not only is he waging an illegal war—he’s threatening war crimes. To the members of our military: remember, you do not have to follow illegal orders.”

Rep. Summer Lee (D-PA) described Trump’s language as “sick and twisted,” adding, “Trump’s genocidal language and indiscriminate warfare cannot be normalized or accepted. He should be removed from office.”

Calls for Immediate Action and War Powers Resolution

Rep. Maxwell Alejandro Frost (D-FL) took a strong stance, calling Trump “an unhinged warmonger and war criminal using violence for personal gain and profit, while innocent people pay the price.” He urged his fellow lawmakers to act, writing, “Every member of Congress must stand up to these threats and put an end to this before more lives are lost.

Congress must reconvene to pass the War Powers Resolution. The 25th Amendment must also be invoked. Congress has to do our damn job. War powers and impeachment.”

The Debate Over the 25th Amendment

The calls for invoking the 25th Amendment come amid rising tensions with Iran. The amendment allows the president to be removed from office if deemed unfit to serve, and it empowers the vice president to temporarily take over the duties of the president.

However, such a move would require significant political support, and it remains unclear whether enough Republican lawmakers would back the effort to remove Trump.
