The FBI announced on Wednesday the arrest of a former U.S. Special Operations Command (SOCOM) employee for allegedly leaking sensitive information about the downing of an F-15e fighter jet over Iran late last week.
FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed that the individual, who had supported top-level military warfighters, was suspected of transmitting classified details to a media member.
Leak Raises National Security Concerns
The leak about the fighter jet’s downing sparked immediate concern within the U.S. government. During a White House press conference on Monday, President Donald Trump condemned the leak, calling it a “sick” act and emphasizing the risks it posed to the pilot’s safety and ongoing military operations.
Trump stated that his administration would exert pressure on the media outlet that broke the story, threatening jail time and citing national security concerns in a bid to uncover the source of the leak.
For over two days, both the administration and the Pentagon refused to confirm reports of the downed jet or the missing pilot, despite multiple media outlets publishing details. The delay in confirmation raised further questions, and President Trump underscored that the leak endangered both the pilot and military rescuers.
President Trump’s Comments on the Leak’s Impact
Trump expressed frustration, explaining how the leak made the rescue operation more difficult by alerting Iran to the presence of a downed pilot. “When they did that, all of a sudden, the entire country of Iran knew that there was a pilot on their land fighting for his life,” Trump said.
He explained that the leak gave Iran an advantage by revealing the search operation and complicating the mission to rescue the pilot.
The president also pointed out that the leak resulted in Iran offering a reward for the capture of the downed pilot. “In addition to a hostile, very talented, very good, very evil military, we had millions of people trying to get an award,” Trump added, emphasizing the stakes of the leak.
Successful Rescue Operations
Despite the challenges created by the leak, the rescue operation was ultimately successful. The backseat weapons systems officer, a colonel, was rescued on Sunday after a dangerous and complex mission involving hundreds of military personnel and aircraft, including some that came under enemy fire. The front-seat pilot of the downed jet had been rescued shortly after the incident occurred in southwestern Iran.
FBI’s Action and Message to Future Leakers
SOCOM, which is based at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Florida, cooperated with the FBI in the investigation.
Patel specifically thanked the Charlotte, North Carolina, field office for its assistance and issued a warning to any potential future leakers. “Let this serve as a message to any would-be leakers: we’re working these cases, and we’re making arrests,” Patel said. “This FBI will not tolerate those who seek to betray our country and put Americans in harm’s way.”
The FBI’s swift action in arresting the former SOCOM employee highlights the seriousness with which the U.S. government addresses leaks of classified information, especially when national security is at risk.
