Detectives with the St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff’s Office have arrested a woman accused of stealing money from an elderly couple she was hired to care for. Authorities say 34-year-old Demyra Willis, of Baton Rouge, was taken into custody on Tuesday, April 7.
Multiple Felony Charges Filed
Willis faces a total of 48 felony charges, including 12 counts each of exploitation of the infirmed, forgery, bank fraud and identity theft. Investigators allege the crimes targeted an elderly couple who relied on her for in-home care.
Allegations of Financial Exploitation
According to investigators, Willis was hired in April 2024 by the victim’s son to assist his 82-year-old father in caring for his ill wife. Within a month, the son was alerted by the bank about suspicious activity on his father’s account.
Detectives say Willis allegedly forged checks made payable to herself and withdrew cash without the victim’s knowledge or consent. The transactions reportedly took place between April 15 and May 6, 2024, totaling $3,250.
Ongoing Legal Process
Willis is currently being held in the parish jail with a bond set at $80,169. Authorities have not released further details as the case moves forward through the legal system.
