A grand jury in Livingston Parish has indicted 35-year-old Dexter Boutte in connection with the death of his 18-year-old girlfriend, Jasmine Newhouse. Boutte was formally charged on April 9 with second-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a felon.
Family Reacts to Indictment
Newhouse’s family expressed both relief and grief following the indictment. Her mother, Twanna Sibley, said she is thankful progress is being made toward justice, while still struggling with the loss. Her grandmother, Toni Griffith, described the indictment as a small step in a longer fight, emphasizing the family’s commitment to seeking justice in Jasmine’s name.
Prosecutors Emphasize Domestic Violence Concerns
Assistant District Attorney Serena Birch, who is handling the case, said the situation highlights how domestic violence can escalate into deadly outcomes. She stated that the prosecution is committed to holding those responsible accountable, particularly in cases involving firearms.
Details of the Shooting
Deputies with the Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office responded around 3 a.m. on January 31, 2026, to an apartment on Magnolia Beach Road after reports of a shooting. They found Newhouse suffering from a gunshot wound to her neck.
Boutte told investigators that the shooting occurred during an argument in which the couple was allegedly struggling over a gun when it discharged.
Victim’s Final Days and Legacy
Newhouse fought for her life for several days while on life support, but her family was later forced to say goodbye on February 6. She had recently turned 18.
Her family honored her wishes as an organ donor, holding an honor walk to recognize her decision to help others even after her death.
Case Moves Forward
The indictment allows the case to proceed toward trial, where prosecutors will present evidence related to the charges. The legal process is expected to continue in the coming months as the family seeks justice.
