A 25-year-old man is facing multiple charges after authorities say he attempted to pull a gun inside a church in Houston while claiming to be a prophet.
Charges Filed After Incident
Emmanuel Ashono Mbwavi has been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, two counts of unlawful carrying of a weapon in a public place and resisting arrest. According to the Houston Police Department, the incident occurred on March 15 at Eden Church.
Confrontation Inside the Church
Police say Mbwavi had earlier been asked to leave the church but later re-entered through another entrance. As he approached a staff member, he allegedly tried to pull a pistol from his waistband.
A church security guard, Fernando Romo, witnessed the situation and intervened. Authorities say Mbwavi struggled to draw the weapon as it snagged on his clothing, giving Romo time to tackle him before he could fire.
Alleged Threats and Disturbing Statements
During the confrontation, Mbwavi allegedly made alarming statements, including claiming he was a “prophet called Warlock” and threatening to kill the pastor. Investigators say he also began counting down while on the ground, raising fears he might be attempting to trigger an explosive device.
Evidence Found by Investigators
Authorities reported that Mbwavi dropped a loaded .22 caliber revolver during the struggle. When security seized his phone, they found a note outlining an alleged plan to kill Pastor Jared Darby, including specific details about where and how the attack would occur.
Prosecutors say Mbwavi was also carrying a backpack containing about 100 rounds of ammunition.
Security Actions Prevent Tragedy
Officials credit the quick actions of the church’s security team with preventing what could have been a deadly attack. A spokesperson for the Houston Police Department said security personnel detained Mbwavi until officers arrived and took him into custody.
Case Status
Mbwavi, who is listed as homeless in court records, is being held on a $50,000 bond. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue to review the case.
