A woman in Bellmead has been sentenced to prison after authorities say she allowed her underage son to drive, leading to a deadly crash that killed a bicyclist.
Conviction and Sentence
Erika Martinez-Ramirez was convicted of endangering a child and sentenced to two years in prison, according to the McLennan County District Attorney’s Office. Prosecutors said the decision reflected a pattern of dangerous behavior that ultimately resulted in a fatal incident.
Details of the Crash
The crash happened around 1:30 a.m. on July 14, 2024, when Martinez-Ramirez gave her car keys to her 14-year-old son and instructed him to take his younger sister to pick up clothes. While driving, the boy struck and killed 67-year-old bicyclist Dennis Welch before crashing into a house. The 10-year-old passenger suffered minor injuries.
Prior Incidents Raise Concerns
Authorities said this was not the first time the teen had been caught driving. In December 2023, he was stopped by police while driving with other children in the car, and Martinez-Ramirez was cited. Just weeks later, he was again involved in a crash and fled the scene. Police had warned her at the time that allowing him to drive was unsafe and illegal.
Why Manslaughter Was Not Charged
Prosecutors said they did not pursue a manslaughter charge because there was no evidence Martinez-Ramirez knew her son was intoxicated at the time of the crash. Instead, they pursued the endangering a child charge, which carries a similar penalty and was easier to prove in court.
Prosecutors Call Case Unusual
Officials noted that parents are rarely prosecuted for crimes committed by their children. However, they said the repeated nature of Martinez-Ramirez’s actions and the fatal outcome justified both the charges and the sentence.
