Police say the suspect used a pulley system to steal $30K worth of copper at Esplanade Mall

A man has been arrested in connection with what police describe as an organized copper theft operation targeting a mall property.

Suspicious Activity at Mall Leads to Discovery

The investigation began on March 27 when a security officer found an exterior door open at the Macy’s building inside Esplanade Mall. When officers arrived, they discovered an elaborate setup designed to extract copper wiring from inside the walls.

Sophisticated Setup Uncovered

According to police, the operation included a pulley system powered by a car battery, allowing large amounts of copper wire to be pulled out efficiently. Investigators said around 200 feet of copper wiring had already been removed, cut, and prepared for pickup, with an estimated value between $25,000 and $30,000.

Suspect Identified Through Surveillance

Using Flock Safety camera systems, detectives identified a truck linked to Jason Chapman near the scene around the time of the incident. The same vehicle was later seen transporting copper along a nearby highway.

Arrest and Evidence Seized

Authorities say Chapman returned to the area on April 1, possibly to retrieve more stolen material. A warrant was issued, and detectives later arrested him at a home in Destrehan.

During a search of the residence, officers reportedly found about 1,000 pounds of copper wire along with receipts from scrapyards.

Ongoing Investigation

Chapman is facing charges including simple burglary and criminal damage to property. Police believe he may be connected to additional copper thefts in the region, and further charges could follow.

Officials described the case as more than a simple theft, pointing to the scale and planning involved. Investigators from multiple agencies are continuing to examine the extent of the operation.
