What started as a prank in North Carolina quickly turned dangerous when a man allegedly opened fire on his girlfriend and her friends after believing she was cheating. Authorities say the situation escalated rapidly, leading to multiple serious charges.
Charges and Arrest
Shyhied Ivey, 20, is facing several charges, including five counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle, domestic violence, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
He was taken into custody and booked into the Mecklenburg County Detention Center on Wednesday.
How the Incident Began
The incident took place on April 4 at around 11:30 p.m. in Charlotte.
A woman and four friends were getting food at Camp North End before heading to the 2700 block of Columbus Circle. While there, the woman and one of her friends decided to play a prank on her boyfriend.
The couple had been dating for about five months, and he was able to track her location through his phone.
The Prank Setup
As part of the prank, one of the woman’s male friends called Ivey and pretended to be romantically involved with her.
After making the call, the group left the area, not expecting the situation to escalate.
The Shooting Incident
While driving on Berryhill Road, Ivey allegedly began following the group in a black Nissan sedan. Authorities say he was driving aggressively and repeatedly calling his girlfriend.
At one point, the woman reported seeing him fire what appeared to be a handgun into the air.
Soon after, when the group stopped at an intersection in their red Nissan Altima, Ivey allegedly pulled up beside them and fired three shots into their car before driving away.
Evidence and Police Response
One of the friends later told police he received a text from Ivey around 1:32 a.m. that read, “stop playin wimme bro.”
Officers with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department met the group shortly afterward.
Traffic camera footage reportedly showed the black car pulling alongside the red one, with three visible flashes consistent with gunfire that shattered the vehicle’s glass.
Injuries and Court Appearance
Authorities said no one was physically injured in the incident.
Police also confirmed that Ivey is a convicted felon. He is scheduled to appear in court on April 23.
