An Idaho man has been sentenced to decades in prison after shooting another man who appeared to be trying to intervene in a confrontation involving a woman. The case highlights how a street altercation quickly escalated into serious violence.
Sentencing and Charges
Logan Dakota Stephens, 25, was sentenced to 20 years in prison, with a minimum of five years to be served before he is eligible for parole.
According to the Bonneville County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, the sentence followed his guilty plea to aggravated battery with an enhancement for using a deadly weapon.
How the Incident Began
The incident occurred on June 30, 2024, near a parking lot on North Capital Avenue in Idaho Falls.
Stephens was walking in an alley with two women when a confrontation broke out. Video footage showed one of the women getting into an argument with the pair.
During the altercation, Stephens pushed the woman to the ground. When she got back up, he pushed her again.
Escalation of the Fight
As the situation unfolded, bystanders gathered nearby. A 35-year-old man stepped in, apparently trying to protect the woman.
The man confronted Stephens, pushing him and throwing a punch. The altercation grew more intense as others joined in and tensions rose.
Stephens then left the alley with the woman he had arrived with, but the man and others followed him into the nearby parking lot.
The Shooting
Once in the parking lot, the confrontation continued out of camera view. Moments later, multiple gunshots were heard.
Stephens shot the man four times, hitting him in the abdomen, thigh, and arm. He later claimed he believed the man was reaching for a weapon, but it was reportedly a cellphone, as the man was attempting to record the incident.
Victim’s Injuries and Impact
The victim survived but suffered serious injuries that required multiple surgeries.
In court, he described the lasting physical and emotional impact of the shooting, stating that he would never walk the same again. He also spoke about the trauma experienced by his family, particularly his children, who now live with ongoing fear and anxiety.
Defendant’s Statement
Stephens apologized during the proceedings, expressing regret for his actions and the harm caused.
He told the court that the incident has been the most difficult experience of his life and acknowledged the pain inflicted on the victim.
