What Happened in Miami
Late on Wednesday night, police in Miami received a 911 call about a small child walking alone near NW 17th Street and NW 7th Avenue. When officers arrived, they found a 6-year-old boy by himself, without any adult nearby.
The child reportedly told police, “Mommy dropped me off and left me,” which immediately raised alarm among the officers.
This area is not considered safe for a child to be alone at night, making the situation even more serious.
How the Child Was Identified
After finding the boy, police shared a “need to identify” alert with local authorities. The next morning, officials from Miami-Dade Public Schools helped identify the child and provided contact details for his mother, Annie Rivera.

Mother’s Explanation
When police located Annie Rivera at her apartment, she was taken into custody.
She explained that:

- Returned home between 3 a.m. and 4 a.m. and went to sleep
Rivera claimed she did not realise her son was missing until she was contacted by child welfare authorities the next morning. She said she assumed her roommate had taken him to school.
However, investigators found that she never asked or arranged for her roommate to take care of the child.
What the Roommate Said
Rivera’s roommate shared a different version of events. She said:
- She went to sleep around 11:30 p.m. and both Rivera and the child were not home at that time
- Later heard the door open and assumed they had returned
- In the morning, she saw Rivera at home but the child was missing
- She thought the boy might be with his godmother
When contacted by authorities, the roommate called Rivera and questioned her about the child. Rivera responded by saying she thought the roommate had taken him to school — something the roommate clearly denied.
Witness Account
A local resident, Arnett Johnson, was the one who alerted the police after seeing the child alone.
He said the situation looked unusual and unsafe for such a young boy, so he immediately called for help. His quick action likely prevented the situation from becoming more dangerous.
Legal Action Taken
Police arrested Annie Rivera and charged her with child neglect without causing great bodily harm.
