A shocking incident at one of New York City’s busiest transit hubs has left several people injured and raised serious questions about public safety and mental health. What started as a normal morning at a crowded subway station quickly turned into a scene of panic and violence.
Attack at Grand Central Terminal
Grand Central Terminal became the centre of chaos when a man armed with a machete attacked passengers on a subway platform. The incident happened around 9:50 a.m. on an uptown 4, 5, 6 train platform, a time when the station is usually full of commuters.
The suspect, identified as Anthony Griffin, allegedly slashed three elderly individuals before police arrived at the scene.
Victims and Injuries
According to the New York Police Department, the attack left three people seriously injured. The victims included an 85-year-old man and a 65-year-old man, both of whom suffered deep cuts. A 70-year-old woman was also injured, with a slash wound to her shoulder.
The sudden and violent nature of the attack created fear among commuters, many of whom witnessed the incident firsthand.
Police Response
When officers reached the scene, they ordered Griffin to drop his weapon. However, police say he refused to follow instructions. As the situation escalated, officers opened fire, killing him on the spot.
Authorities have stated that the use of force was necessary to stop the attack and prevent further harm to the public.
Family Friend’s Reaction
A close family friend, Deborah Brown, has questioned the official version of events. She expressed disbelief that Griffin could have carried out such a violent act and demanded proof.
Brown described Griffin as someone who had been struggling with mental health issues but insisted that he was not the kind of person who would harm others without reason. She also revealed that he often carried a machete, claiming it was for personal protection.
Mental Health Concerns
Brown also mentioned that Griffin had been going through a difficult period and may have been triggered by something. While she acknowledged that his actions, if true, were wrong, she suggested that his mental condition could have played a role.
She criticised the police response, saying officers could have used non-lethal methods like a Taser instead of shooting him.
Background of the Suspect
Neighbours said that Griffin was a rapper known by the name “Fox 5.” People in the area described him as someone familiar in the neighbourhood, which made the incident even more shocking for those who knew him.
His sudden involvement in such a violent act has left many confused and searching for answers.
