A major police operation during one of Louisiana’s most popular events has drawn attention after multiple arrests and weapon seizures were reported. Authorities say the actions taken helped maintain safety at a large public gathering attended by thousands.
Heavy Security at the Strawberry Festival
During the Ponchatoula Strawberry Festival, law enforcement agencies stepped up security measures to ensure public safety. Over the weekend, deputies worked actively across the festival grounds to monitor crowds and prevent any dangerous situations.
According to officials, the increased presence of officers, along with the use of cameras and drones, played an important role in maintaining order during the event.
Arrests and Weapons Seized
Sheriff Gerald Sticker confirmed that deputies arrested 19 individuals during the festival. Authorities also confiscated 12 firearms from those taken into custody.
Most of the people arrested were under the age of 25, including two minors. The primary charge in many of these cases was illegal carrying of a firearm. Some individuals also faced additional charges such as resisting arrest and drug possession.
Officials also noted that one of the arrested individuals had an outstanding warrant, while another had a prior criminal record.
Strict Rules for Public Safety
Authorities made it clear that rules regarding weapons and illegal substances have always been in place for the festival. However, this year those rules were more widely communicated to the public in advance.
Law enforcement emphasised that such events are meant to be safe, family-friendly environments, and bringing weapons or drugs is strictly prohibited under the law.
Lower Crowd, Safer Experience
Festival organisers estimated that around 250,000 to 275,000 people attended the event this year, which was slightly lower than earlier projections.
Some local residents and business owners felt that the smaller crowd made the event more comfortable and safer. Many shared the opinion that reduced numbers, combined with stronger security, improved the overall experience.
Previous Threats and Preventive Action
Before the festival began, authorities had already taken preventive steps by banning four individuals who were suspected of making threats related to the event. These actions were taken seriously, especially after a shooting incident that occurred during the previous year’s festival.
Thanks to these precautions, no shootings were reported within the festival grounds this year.
Nearby Incident Raises Concern
Despite the strong security at the festival, a separate shooting occurred less than a mile away at a nearby location. Two individuals were injured in that incident, both suffering gunshot wounds to the leg.
Officials clarified that this shooting was not connected to the festival itself. However, it did raise concerns about safety in surrounding areas during large events.
Focus on Future Safety
Authorities and organisers have described this year’s security efforts as a success. They plan to continue using similar strategies in future events to ensure public safety.
The goal remains to provide a safe and enjoyable environment for families and visitors attending the festival.
