A deeply concerning case from Louisiana has come to light after a toddler was hospitalised due to a suspected drug overdose. Authorities have arrested a couple in connection with the incident, raising serious questions about child safety and neglect.
What Happened in Metairie
The incident took place in Metairie, where a 2-year-old boy was rushed to the hospital after showing signs of a drug overdose. According to the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office, the child was initially taken to a local hospital early Tuesday morning.
Doctors reported that the toddler was unresponsive and had very shallow breathing when he arrived, indicating a life-threatening condition.
Condition of the Child
Medical staff acted quickly and gave the child Narcan, a medicine used to reverse opioid overdoses. This helped stabilise his condition.
After initial treatment, the boy was shifted to a children’s hospital in New Orleans for further care. Reports confirmed that he tested positive for fentanyl and cocaine. His current condition has not been officially shared.
Arrest of the Couple
Authorities arrested Kayla Bonilla, the child’s mother, and her boyfriend Tyler Brady. Both have been charged with second-degree cruelty to a juvenile.
Officials confirmed that Brady is not the child’s father.
Delay in Seeking Help
Investigators found that the child had shown clear signs of distress for several hours before being taken to the hospital. Despite this, the couple allegedly delayed seeking medical help.
Authorities believe the delay may have been intentional, possibly to avoid involvement from law enforcement. This delay has become a key part of the case against them.

At present, officials are still trying to determine how the child came into contact with fentanyl and cocaine. This remains an important part of the investigation.
The couple is currently being held without bail at a correctional facility in Gretna.
