A shocking incident in New York has raised serious concerns after a man allegedly threatened a lost teenager with autism who was simply asking for help. The case has drawn attention to issues around gun safety and public behaviour.
Incident Involving Lost Teenager
The incident took place on April 11 in Oswego. According to authorities, a 14-year-old boy with autism had become lost while riding his bicycle. His phone battery had died, leaving him unable to contact anyone.
Looking for help, the teenager approached a nearby house and used a doorbell camera system to ask for directions.
Man Allegedly Points Gun at Teen
Police say Philip Nichols, 46, responded by opening a window and pointing a handgun at the boy. The teenager, frightened by the situation, quickly left the property.
However, the situation did not end there. Authorities claim Nichols then got into his vehicle and followed the boy.
Chase and Further Threats Reported
According to investigators, Nichols drove a Tesla SUV and allegedly followed the teenager for around 10 minutes. During this time, he is accused of pointing a shotgun at the boy and making threatening remarks.
The teenager reportedly feared for his life during the encounter.
Police Response and Investigation
Deputies from the Oswego County Sheriff’s Office later went to Nichols’ home to question him. When they arrived, Nichols allegedly came to the door holding both a long gun and a handgun.
Officers instructed him to drop the weapons, and he complied. Police then confiscated the firearms found at the scene.
Charges Filed Against the Suspect
Nichols is now facing several charges, including menacing, criminal possession of a weapon, and acting in a way that could harm a child. Reports say he admitted to pointing the weapons and following the teenager.
He claimed that he acted out of fear for his safety and his family’s safety.
As of now, Nichols is not in custody but is scheduled to appear in court on April 30.
