The breakthrough came in April 2026, nearly 15 months after she was last seen. Two hikers in Cowlitz County made an unexpected discovery while walking through a forested area. They found some clothing along with two bones.
Realising something was wrong, they immediately informed authorities. A photo of the bones was sent to a forensic expert, who confirmed that they were human.
Due to the difficult location and late timing, officials could not reach the site immediately. The next day, a proper search operation was organised with the help of detectives, the coroner’s office, and search and rescue teams.
Search Operation and Identification
During the organised search, officials found nearly complete skeletal remains along with clothing and personal belongings. The area had already been considered important in the investigation earlier, but no evidence had been found during previous searches.
Soon after the recovery, authorities worked to confirm the identity. Using dental records, the remains were officially identified as Hailey Athay.
