A disturbing case from North Carolina has shocked many people after new details revealed how a family gathering turned deadly. What was meant to be a peaceful Thanksgiving dinner allegedly became the centre of a poisoning case involving a mother and her own children.
What Happened During Thanksgiving Dinner?
According to investigators, the incident took place during a Thanksgiving gathering in 2025. Gudrun Casper-Leinenkugel, a 53-year-old woman, is accused of poisoning a bottle of wine that was served during the family meal.
Her two daughters and one daughter’s boyfriend reportedly drank from the same bottle. Soon after, all three started feeling unwell, showing symptoms similar to the flu.
Tragically, one of her daughters, 32-year-old Leela Livis, died the next day.
Cause of Death and Toxic Chemical
Authorities later found that the wine had been contaminated with acetonitrile, a toxic chemical. This substance is especially dangerous because it turns into cyanide inside the human body after some time.
This delayed reaction makes it harder to detect early, as symptoms may not appear immediately.
While one daughter survived after drinking only a small amount, her boyfriend became seriously ill and had to stay in the hospital for several days due to high levels of cyanide in his body.
Charges Against the Mother
Gudrun Casper-Leinenkugel now faces serious charges. These include first-degree murder for the death of her daughter, along with attempted murder charges related to the other victims.
She is also accused of distributing a harmful substance through food or drink, which is considered a major offence.
Suspicious Details and Investigation
Investigators found several suspicious details during their inquiry. Reports suggest that the wine bottle was already open before it was served, and it appeared that some amount had already been used.
The accused reportedly gave different explanations, claiming the bottle may have been stored near chemicals and could have been contaminated accidentally.
She also suggested that others in the house might have been responsible. However, authorities found a container of acetonitrile at her residence, raising further concerns.
Link to an Older Case
As the investigation continued, police discovered a possible connection to an older death. Authorities believe the same chemical may have been used in the 2007 death of a man who lived on her property.
At that time, the death was considered accidental. However, after new findings and repeated emergency calls linked to her home, officials reopened the case.
Now, investigators are looking into whether more incidents could be connected.
Why This Case Is So Shocking
This case has drawn attention because it involves a family setting where people are expected to feel safe. The idea that a trusted environment could turn dangerous has left many people disturbed.
It also raises concerns about how toxic substances can be misused and how important proper investigation is in suspicious deaths.
