The story of Tyrita Julius is both shocking and heartbreaking. What started as a brutal shooting later turned into a much deeper and disturbing crime. This real-life case, featured on Snapped, reveals how jealousy, control, and obsession can lead to tragic consequences.
The Night Tyrita Julius Was Shot
In November 2015, Tyrita Julius was sitting in a car outside her home in Linden, New Jersey, with her 15-year-old daughter, Chanel Colbert. Suddenly, a man walked up to the car and started shooting.
Tyrita was hit multiple times in her chest and body, while Chanel was also injured when a bullet grazed her mouth and wrist. Despite the attack, both mother and daughter survived and were rushed to the hospital. Chanel later shared that she went into shock and was more worried about her mother than her own injuries.
The Investigation Begins
Police began searching for clues to find out who was behind the attack. Surveillance footage showed a heavy-built man walking near the scene before the shooting and then running toward a silver SUV.
Investigators also looked into Tyrita’s personal life. She was part of the Ruff Ryders Motorcycle Club and had been in a relationship with Jennifer Sweeney. Although they had broken up, people described Jennifer as someone who could be jealous and controlling, which raised suspicion.
Jennifer Sweeney Comes Under Scrutiny
At first, Jennifer told police she had not spoken to Tyrita for a few days but claimed they had plans to meet on the night of the shooting. Since the attacker was male, police did not immediately consider her a suspect.
Tyrita herself, while recovering in the hospital, also said that Jennifer was not responsible. During this time, Jennifer appeared caring and supportive. However, it later became clear that her feelings for Tyrita had not ended.

Prosecutors revealed that Jennifer believed they were still in a relationship and had even started showing people engagement rings, without Tyrita agreeing to anything. This showed a one-sided emotional attachment that worried investigators.
Tyrita Julius Suddenly Disappears
Three months after recovering from the shooting, Tyrita was discharged from the hospital. Soon after, she went missing.
When questioned, Jennifer said she had dropped Tyrita at a train station and then went to a friend’s house. But her story did not match the evidence. Surveillance footage showed that neither she nor Tyrita were at the station that night.
Further investigation revealed that Jennifer had combined their phone plans, which allowed her to track Tyrita’s messages and calls. When she found out Tyrita was in contact with another man, police believe she became extremely angry.
The Role of Andre Harris
Police later connected Jennifer to Andre Harris, a man she knew from high school. He owned a silver SUV, similar to the one seen near the shooting scene.
When police searched his property, they made a horrifying discovery—human remains buried in the yard. It was later confirmed to be Tyrita.
Andre eventually confessed that he had shot Tyrita months earlier but claimed that Jennifer had forced him to help cover up the crime. According to his statement, Jennifer threatened him and made him help bury the body.
Investigators found Tyrita’s body wrapped in trash bags, with an electrical cord around her neck, confirming the disturbing details.

The Motive Behind the Crime
The case revealed a troubling motive. Jennifer reportedly wanted to rebuild her relationship with Tyrita and even planned to propose to her. She also wanted Tyrita to move in with her.
However, Tyrita was not ready for such a commitment, especially after her recovery. This rejection may have triggered anger and obsession, leading to the crime.
Justice and Sentencing
Both Jennifer and Andre were charged with serious crimes, including murder and desecration of human remains. Andre accepted a plea deal and testified against Jennifer in court. He was sentenced to 16 years in prison.
Jennifer, on the other hand, was found guilty on most charges. In May 2022, she was sentenced to 95 years in prison. She will not be eligible for parole until she is over 100 years old.
