A disturbing case from Florida has raised serious concerns about student safety, especially for children with special needs. A teacher is now facing legal action after being accused of using excessive force on a young student inside a classroom.
Florida Teacher Accused of Abusing Student
Nikol Marie Rodriguez, a 29-year-old teacher, has been charged with child abuse without causing great bodily harm. The incident reportedly took place on March 3, 2024, at Peace Christian Academy.
The case involves an 8-year-old student with autism who was under her supervision. According to police, the child could understand simple instructions but had difficulty expressing himself clearly.
What Happened Inside the Classroom
Authorities say the incident was captured on CCTV footage from inside the classroom. At the time, the student was sitting quietly on the floor and was not behaving aggressively.
Police reports state that the teacher first turned the child around in what was described as an aggressive manner because he was not facing the correct direction. A few minutes later, the child moved to a bean bag and sat down calmly.
Despite the child not showing any threatening behaviour, the situation reportedly escalated further.
Alleged Use of Force
According to the investigation, Rodriguez went behind the student and pulled his hands behind his back. The child tried to free himself and appeared to be in pain.
Police allege that the teacher then slammed the child’s upper body and head onto the floor. She is also accused of pinning him down and using her leg to hold his arm in place while he struggled.
After releasing him, she allegedly pushed the child into a table when he tried to stand up.
Injuries Noticed Later
The child’s mother later noticed injuries while giving him a bath. Reports mention a puncture wound on his arm, bruise marks that looked like finger grips, and scratches on his chest.
These injuries raised concern and led to further investigation by authorities.
Different Versions of the Incident
The school’s internal report suggested that the teacher was using “supportive de-escalation procedures” because the child’s behaviour was becoming difficult.
Rodriguez’s lawyer also claimed that she was trying to restrain a child who was acting out. However, police stated that the video did not show any aggressive behaviour from the student at the time.
This difference in accounts has become an important part of the case.
Arrest and Legal Status
Police arrested Rodriguez and took her into custody. She was later released after posting a bond of $5,000. Her next court hearing is still pending.
The case will now move forward in court, where both sides will present their evidence.
