The case of Abbi Schaeffer is one of those stories that slowly revealed its truth over time, leaving behind many disturbing details. What began as a missing person case soon turned into a shocking investigation involving hidden evidence, drug use, and a body discovered in a heartbreaking condition. Now, years later, one of the accused has admitted his role, while another is still on the run.
Abbi Schaeffer’s Disappearance Raises Alarm
Abbi Schaeffer, a 22-year-old woman, was last seen on May 23, 2022. A home security camera captured her leaving her family house in Clay County, Missouri, along with her cat. She was seen getting into a grey BMW, which became a key detail in the investigation.
When she did not return, her family reported her missing on May 30. Using a location tracking app on her phone, they traced her last known location to a house in Jackson County. However, when police reached that location, they could not find her or any clear answers.
A neighbour later shared that the person living in that house drove a dark-coloured BMW and had a U-Haul truck parked outside during that time. This information helped investigators connect the vehicle to Jacob Block.
Contradicting Statements and Key Evidence
Police found Jacob Block on June 2, 2022. Initially, he denied knowing Abbi Schaeffer at all. Later, he changed his statement slightly, saying he knew someone with the same name but still denied any involvement in her disappearance.
However, surveillance footage revealed the truth. It showed that Schaeffer and Block had entered a house together late at night on May 23, which was the last time she was seen alive. After that moment, there was no footage of her leaving the property.
In the following days, cameras captured Block and his co-accused, Eunice Carlo-Martinez, repeatedly moving in and out of the house. At one point, Carlo-Martinez was seen carrying cleaning equipment and turning security cameras off and on, which raised serious suspicion.
The Chilling Discovery of Her Remains
A few days later, on May 26, both suspects were seen loading a large black box into a U-Haul truck before leaving the house. This detail later became one of the most important clues in the case.
Around the same time, Schaeffer’s cat was found abandoned near the property and was later identified through a microchip.
For several months, there was no trace of Schaeffer. Then, on April 1, 2023, skeletal remains were discovered inside a broken box lying in a ditch along a roadway. Investigators quickly noticed that the box matched the one seen in the surveillance footage.
Further investigation revealed that photos and videos found on the suspects’ phones showed a similar wooden box inside the house. The crime lab later confirmed that it was the same box where the remains were found.
Evidence Suggests Drug Overdose
As the case progressed, investigators uncovered messages from the suspects’ social media accounts. These messages suggested that Schaeffer had been given fentanyl, a dangerous drug, and suffered an overdose.
Due to the condition of the remains, the exact cause of death could not be officially confirmed. However, forensic tests found fentanyl-related substances in her brain tissue, strongly indicating that an overdose may have played a role in her death.
Authorities believe that after she died, the accused tried to hide the situation by placing her body inside a box and abandoning it along a roadside.
Jacob Block Pleads Guilty
In January 2025, both Jacob Block and Eunice Carlo-Martinez were arrested and charged with serious offences related to hiding the crime. These included abandoning a corpse and tampering with physical evidence.
On April 17, 2026, Jacob Block pleaded guilty to both charges in court. He was sentenced to six years in prison and was given credit for the time he had already spent in custody.
His co-accused, Eunice Carlo-Martinez, is still missing and has not yet been brought before the court.
