A case of shoplifting at a self-checkout in Louisiana has grabbed attention after police revealed it was not a one-time incident. What seemed like a simple theft turned into a larger case involving multiple locations across different states.
Shoplifting Attempt in Kenner
Police in Kenner, Louisiana, arrested 47-year-old Tia Haskins after she allegedly tried to steal items from a store using a self-checkout system. According to authorities, she entered the store and began scanning items but did not pay for everything she selected.
Officials say she scanned and paid for only one item while placing several other items directly into her bag without scanning them. She then attempted to leave the store with the unpaid goods.
“Skip-Scanning” Method Used
Police described the method used as “skip-scanning,” where a person intentionally avoids scanning some items while pretending to complete a normal checkout process.
This type of theft has become more common with the rise of self-checkout systems, as it can be harder to immediately detect compared to traditional shoplifting.
In a statement, the police department made it clear that such behaviour is illegal, adding humorously that “buy one, take the rest” is not a valid checkout option.
Arrest and Further Investigation
Officers quickly took Haskins into custody at the scene. However, the case did not stop there.
During the investigation, police discovered that this was not an isolated incident. Haskins has been linked to six other shoplifting cases across multiple states, including Louisiana, Mississippi, and Nevada.
This pattern suggests that the alleged actions were part of repeated behaviour rather than a one-time mistake.
Facing Legal Consequences
Haskins has been booked into jail, and authorities are continuing to look into the additional cases connected to her.
Because the incidents span different states, further legal action could involve multiple jurisdictions, which may lead to more serious consequences.
