A troubling incident from Tennessee has raised serious concerns about student safety in schools, especially for children who cannot speak for themselves. A teacher is now facing legal action after being accused of physically harming a young, nonverbal student inside a classroom.
What Happened at the School?
The incident took place at Selmer Elementary School, located in a small town about 100 miles from Memphis. On March 19, a deputy from the McNairy County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of a child being harmed at the school.
According to witnesses, a teacher identified as Meg Day, 49, allegedly grabbed a 9-year-old nonverbal student and dragged him across a rug inside the classroom. The act was reportedly seen by other staff members, who immediately raised concerns.
Injuries Reported
After the incident, the child was checked by the school nurse. It was found that he had suffered what is commonly known as “carpet burn,” along with a visible red mark on his body.
Another staff member reportedly noticed the student reaching toward his back in discomfort before the injury was identified. The matter was quickly reported to the school principal and assistant principal.
Legal Action Taken
Following the investigation, Meg Day was arrested and charged with assault. She was taken into custody and booked into the county jail. However, records show that she was later released.
Cases like this are taken very seriously, especially when they involve vulnerable children who may not be able to communicate what happened to them.
Another Incident in the Same District
In a separate but related concern, another incident was reported within the same school district. At Selmer Middle School, a 65-year-old cafeteria worker named Sequoia Ann Hively was accused of hitting a 15-year-old student on the back of the head.
Authorities said the act was captured on video. Fortunately, the student did not suffer any physical injuries after being examined by the school nurse.
The school administration informed the student’s family that the employee would not return to work until the matter was fully investigated. She was also taken into custody but later released.
Growing Concerns Around Student Safety
These incidents have raised serious concerns among parents and the community about student safety within schools. When children, especially those with special needs or communication challenges, are involved, the responsibility of care becomes even more important.
Schools are expected to provide a safe and supportive environment, and any form of physical harm goes against that responsibility.
