Fetterman on Democrats’ redistricting victory in Virginia: ‘We all lose at this point’

The ongoing battle over redistricting in the United States has sparked sharp reactions across the political spectrum. After Virginia voters approved a Democratic redistricting initiative, Democratic Sen. John Fetterman (Pa.) expressed his dismay, emphasizing that the move ultimately hurts the country.

Fetterman’s Reaction to the Virginia Redistricting

On Tuesday evening, during an appearance on NewsNation’s “Cuomo,” Fetterman responded to the news of Virginia’s redistricting initiative passing. He shared his disappointment, stating, “We all lose at this point.” Fetterman’s reaction came after learning that the Democrats’ push for redrawing Virginia’s congressional districts had passed by a narrow margin of 51 percent to 49 percent.

While Fetterman acknowledged the logic behind the Democrats’ move to redraw district lines, particularly in response to a similar action in Texas by Republicans, he warned against the consequences of such actions.

“Two wrongs don’t make a right,” he said, arguing that both sides’ aggressive redistricting efforts are damaging to the nation. Fetterman stressed that continued partisan battles over redistricting only serve to degrade democracy in the U.S.

Details of the Redistricting in Virginia

The redistricting initiative in Virginia will allow Democrats to potentially gain control of 10 of the state’s 11 congressional seats, an increase from their current 6-5 advantage. The new map is set to last until the 2030 census, after which an independent commission will take over the process.

This initiative comes in response to redistricting moves by Republicans, particularly in Texas, where the GOP drew new boundaries to secure additional Republican seats in the House. The tit-for-tat nature of the redistricting wars has created a bitter partisan environment.

House Democratic Leader’s Praise for Virginia’s Victory

While Fetterman voiced his concerns, House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries (N.Y.) took a different view. Jeffries praised the Virginia redistricting result as a win for Democrats, framing it as a necessary counteraction to what he sees as Republican attempts to skew the political landscape in their favor.

Jeffries referenced President Donald Trump’s push for Texas Republicans to redraw district lines to add five new GOP-leaning seats, saying that this sparked a reaction among state legislators. “While many expected Democrats to roll over and play dead, we did the opposite,” Jeffries said, framing the Virginia vote as a decisive moment for Democrats.
