An 80-year-old man from Florida has been arrested after he allegedly shot his 83-year-old wife during an argument at their home in Orlando.
According to police, the argument started over a planned cruise trip. The wife was said to be suffering from dementia. What began as a heated discussion ended in a tragic incident that has shocked the local community.
Incident Reported in Orlando
The incident took place in Orlando, Florida, at a house located in the 8000 block of Romerly Court. According to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, deputies received a call around 5:15 p.m. on Saturday. The caller reportedly said, “My wife is down and I’m just sitting here.”
When officers reached the home, they saw 80-year-old William Elwood Simmons standing in the garage and waving at them. Deputies asked him what had happened. As per the arrest affidavit, he allegedly told them, “I do know what happened, I did it.”
Officers then asked if there were any weapons inside the house. He reportedly replied that there was one on the floor and said he had placed it there.
Victim Found Dead in Kitchen
Deputies entered the house and found Nancy Simmons lying in the kitchen. She had suffered a gunshot wound and was declared dead at the scene. Police also found a shotgun on the floor along with a spent shell casing.
William Simmons was immediately taken into custody and transported to a police station for further questioning.
Argument Over Cruise Turned Violent
During the police interview, Simmons reportedly admitted that he shot his wife. According to the affidavit, the couple had been arguing in the kitchen about going on a cruise. Nancy Simmons allegedly used abusive language during the argument, which he claimed triggered him.
Police say Simmons then went to his bedroom, took a shotgun from the closet, and returned to the kitchen. The argument continued, and he allegedly fired one shot at his wife.
Investigators also noted that Simmons told them he had been dealing with his wife’s dementia for a long time. He reportedly said he loved “the old Nancy” and added that he would rather live in prison than continue dealing with her illness.
Murder Charge Filed
William Elwood Simmons has been charged with first-degree murder. He is currently being held at the Orange County Jail without bond.
