A deeply disturbing trial has begun in England, where two men stand accused of abusing and killing a young boy they had adopted. The case of Preston Davey has shocked the public, especially because it involves a child who was placed in what was believed to be a safe and loving home.
Early Life and Foster Care
Preston Davey was born in 2022 and was placed into foster care just days after his birth. For the first 10 months of his life, he lived with experienced foster carer Sandra Cooper and her husband.
Sandra had fostered more than 40 children over nearly three decades, and she was known for her dedication and care. When the time came for Preston to be adopted, she believed he would be going into a good home.
Adoption and Growing Concerns
Preston was adopted by Jamie Varley and John McGowan-Fazakerley. At first, everything seemed positive, and there were no immediate warning signs.
However, Sandra Cooper later told the court that she became worried soon after the adoption. The adoptive parents cancelled most of the scheduled follow-up meetings, which raised concerns. Last Meeting With Preston
Sandra recalled the last time she saw Preston alive. She said the meeting was difficult to arrange, but she was determined to see him. During that visit, she noticed changes in the child’s behaviour. He appeared stiff and less responsive than before.
Soon after that meeting, the adoptive couple filed a complaint against her. Although the complaint was not acted upon, Sandra believed it was a way to cut off contact. She described that moment as deeply painful, feeling as if she had lost the child forever.
The Day of the Tragedy
On July 27, 2023, Preston died at just 13 months old. On that day, Jamie Varley was alone at home with the child. According to reports, he recorded a video showing the baby in distress, but allegedly did not attempt to help.
Nearly two hours later, when John McGowan-Fazakerley returned home, they took the child to the hospital. By then, Preston was unconscious and in cardiac arrest. Doctors were unable to save him.
Conflicting Claims and Medical Findings
Varley claimed that the child had been left briefly in a baby chair in the bathtub and was found drowning. However, medical evidence did not support this version of events. Reports suggested that the child was dry and showed no clear signs of drowning.
A postmortem examination revealed multiple injuries, both internal and external, which were not accidental. The injuries appeared to have been caused shortly before his death. The official cause of death was identified as airway obstruction, possibly due to smothering or something being forced into his mouth.
Serious Charges Against the Accused
Jamie Varley has been charged with multiple serious offences, including murder, manslaughter, s**ual assault of a child, and cruelty. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
John McGowan-Fazakerley is also facing charges, including allowing the death of a child, cruelty, and s**ual assault. He too has pleaded not guilty. The trial is currently ongoing, and the court will examine all evidence before reaching a verdict.
