A deeply disturbing case from Florida has resulted in the arrest of a mother accused of severely neglecting her young son. The conditions inside the home were found to be unsanitary and dangerous, with the child left alone for days in the presence of aggressive dogs.
Allegations of Child Neglect
Ashley Burdick, 41, faces charges of child neglect without great bodily harm after her arrest in early April. Authorities say the situation came to light when a concerned neighbor reported that a young child, diagnosed with autism, was left alone in the home for several days with no adult supervision.
According to the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office, the child had been alone for approximately four days, surrounded by multiple aggressive dogs inside the residence in Merritt Island, Florida.
Child’s Testimony and Condition
Upon arriving at the home, deputies spoke with the boy, who confirmed he had been left alone. He also told officers he could not answer the door because of the aggressive dogs inside the house. The deputy communicated with the child through a bathroom window after the boy explained that he was unable to come to the door due to the animals.
The child reportedly confirmed that he had been left without adult supervision for days, and when authorities attempted to contact his mother, they were unable to reach her as the phone went straight to voicemail.
Unsafe and Unsanitary Conditions
When a state investigator visited the residence, they found conditions that were deemed unsafe for a child. The home was described as unsanitary, with feces found on the floor and overall neglect of cleanliness.
Additionally, the child told investigators that he had been left without food for long periods, even going without food for up to two weeks. He also mentioned feeling unsafe and revealed that he was not enrolled in any schooling, further highlighting the neglect he suffered.
Disturbing Incidents and Allegations of Abuse
The boy’s account also included allegations of physical violence by his mother. He mentioned an incident where he became intoxicated after unknowingly drinking juice that contained moonshine.
Burdick reportedly also attempted to prevent others from speaking to authorities, according to a witness who said that Burdick had reached out to her and asked her not to share information with the Department of Children and Families.
Legal Proceedings and Future Court Date
Burdick was released from jail after her arrest, but she is set to appear in court on May 14 for her arraignment.
