A long-unsolved mystery involving dismembered human remains discovered in rural Ohio has finally been solved, leading to shocking revelations about the man behind the gruesome act. Larry Drotleff, 81, has confessed to dismembering his father’s body and hiding the remains in two suitcases, which were discovered by children in Dover Township back in 1998.
The Gruesome Discovery
On February 1, 1998, a group of children playing in rural Dover Township stumbled upon a suitcase along Winkler Hill Road. Inside, they found several unidentified male body parts, sparking a decade-long investigation by the Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s Office.
A second suitcase containing more body parts was found about a week later, 15 miles away. Although DNA testing confirmed both suitcases contained remains from the same individual, investigators were unable to identify the victim at the time.
Breakthrough in 2023: DNA Leads to the Culprit
For over 20 years, the case remained unsolved until it was reopened in 2023. Advanced DNA testing techniques allowed investigators to trace the remains to a man named Lawrence A. Drotleff, revealing that he had been the victim’s son. In January 2024, Larry Drotleff was interviewed by Ohio law enforcement and allegedly confessed to his involvement in the dismemberment of his father’s body.
Larry Drotleff’s Confession
According to the Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s Office, Drotleff claimed that he had found his father dead at their shared home after leaving for work one day. Upon returning, he discovered his father’s body and, without notifying authorities, decided to dismember it with a manual hand saw. He then disposed of some parts in the suitcases, while others were discarded in bags in a nearby dumpster.
Drotleff’s Father’s Identity Revealed
Through DNA testing, law enforcement confirmed that Larry Drotleff was the biological son of the deceased man, who was identified as Lawrence A. Drotleff. At the time of his death, the elder Drotleff would have been approximately 93 years old.
No Murder Charge, But Federal Charges for Theft
Although Larry Drotleff cannot face murder charges due to Ohio’s statute of limitations expiring, he is now facing federal charges for allegedly stealing his late father’s Social Security and pension benefits. According to federal prosecutors, Drotleff stole nearly $250,000 over the course of 15 years.
Federal records show that from February 1998 to September 2010, Drotleff unlawfully took $111,485 in Social Security benefits intended for his father, as well as $135,040 from his father’s General Electric pension.
The Sheriff’s Office Responds
In a statement, the Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s Office remarked that while the case didn’t lead to a murder conviction, the “inhumane treatment” of the body and the theft from his deceased father were inexcusable. They also expressed their disbelief that such a crime could have been driven by greed.
The case remains one of the most disturbing to be solved in the area, and it serves as a stark reminder of the potential depths of human greed and cruelty.
