As Ohio’s 2026 Republican primary for governor draws near, Vivek Ramaswamy remains confident in his path to victory, but the race has become more competitive than initially expected. Despite his national name recognition, impressive fundraising, and ties to President Donald Trump, Ramaswamy is encountering rising criticism from within his own party, particularly over his policies and his ethnic background.
Ramaswamy’s Strategy: A General Election Focus
Ramaswamy, who has leveraged his status as a biotech entrepreneur and presidential candidate, is focusing his campaign efforts on the general election, which he believes will feature a stark contrast between himself and his Democratic opponent, former public health director Amy Acton.
His campaign has seen massive fundraising success, reportedly raising a record $50 million, though much of it comes from Ramaswamy’s personal wealth. Ramaswamy’s approach has largely ignored his GOP primary opponent so far, signaling a sense of assurance about his standing within the party.
“We face the most consequential election for governor in the history of our state,” Ramaswamy told Republicans at a recent fundraising event, reinforcing his view that the primary is not his main concern. Instead, his campaign is centered on contrasting himself with Acton, whom he criticizes as part of a Democratic agenda that he views as harmful to Ohio’s future.
Rising Discontent Within the GOP
However, as the primary approaches, discontent within the Republican base is surfacing. Many voters are expressing dissatisfaction with Ramaswamy’s proposals, such as consolidating Ohio’s university system and raising the voting age to 25, which critics argue are out of touch with the average Ohioan’s concerns. Additionally, his position on energy demands, the Epstein files, and the ongoing conflict with Iran are fueling further criticism.
The controversy surrounding Ramaswamy’s policies has evolved into a more personal attack, with ethnic and racial animosity targeting the candidate. As a child of Indian immigrants, Ramaswamy has faced increasing levels of criticism based on his heritage and Hindu faith, an issue exacerbated by the rise of his primary challenger, Casey Putsch.
The Challenge from Casey Putsch
Casey Putsch, an engineer and vehicle designer, has emerged as a challenger to Ramaswamy within the GOP primary, capturing the attention of conservative voters dissatisfied with the establishment. Putsch, who describes himself as “The Car Guy,” has criticized Ramaswamy for his elitist background and his perceived lack of alignment with Ohioans’ values.
Though his campaign has raised a modest $123,000 and his rallies are sparsely attended, Putsch’s anti-Ramaswamy messaging resonates with a segment of the GOP base. His criticism focuses on Ramaswamy’s connections to national Republican leadership, including his ties to Trump, as well as the Republican Party’s handling of national issues like the Epstein files and energy policies.
Despite his small campaign infrastructure, Putsch has gained traction with voters like Tyler Morris, an Ohioan disillusioned with both Trump and mainstream Republican candidates. “He’s a guy like me,” said Morris, referring to Putsch’s outsider appeal. “He’s not a politician. He wants to speak for the average, everyday Ohioan.”
Racial Tensions and Personal Attacks
Putsch’s campaign, however, has stirred racial tensions, with some of his rhetoric openly targeting Ramaswamy’s ethnicity and religion. Putsch has been accused of contributing to the spread of ethnic hatred, with videos and comments that disparage Ramaswamy’s Indian heritage and Hindu faith. In one of his campaign videos, Putsch referred to Ramaswamy as needing to be “destroyed,” and he has used racial epithets in his online presence.
Ramaswamy has consistently rejected such attacks and responded by calling out racism and antisemitism within his own party. In a widely shared opinion piece, he called for the rejection of far-right, white nationalist elements and emphasized that true American identity is rooted in the principles of liberty and democracy, not racial or ethnic origin.
Support and Opposition from Ohio Voters
Despite the challenges, Ramaswamy has garnered significant support, particularly among GOP voters who align with his conservative values. Pam Koch, a “pro-life Christian” from Ohio, expressed her enthusiasm for Ramaswamy at a Lincoln Reagan Day dinner, saying that his views align with her own. She praised Ramaswamy for his stance on values, citing his strong connection to religious conservatives in Ohio.
However, Ron Eckles, a retired communications worker, remains committed to Putsch, appreciating his outsider status and his focus on issues like gun rights. Eckles also favors Putsch’s Ohioan roots, seeing him as more connected to the state compared to Ramaswamy, who attended elite institutions like Harvard and Yale.
The Primary and Beyond
With just days to go before the primary, Ramaswamy’s position remains strong, but he faces mounting opposition from both within his party and beyond. His primary campaign, which some see as resembling a general election strategy, will be tested against Putsch’s populist challenge.
As Ohio approaches one of its most contentious Republican primaries in recent memory, the outcome could have significant implications for the state’s future leadership and its place within the broader national political landscape.
While Ramaswamy’s national star power and fundraising capacity remain formidable, his ability to galvanize conservative voters in Ohio will ultimately determine whether he can overcome the obstacles posed by his GOP challenger and move on to the general election.
