A new controversy has erupted in the United States after President Donald Trump called for late-night host Jimmy Kimmel to be fired over a joke about First Lady Melania Trump. The situation has triggered a wider debate about free speech, media responsibility, and political pressure on major companies.
What Sparked the Controversy
The issue began during an episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live! aired last Thursday, just days before the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner. In a parody skit, Kimmel delivered a mock monologue as if he were hosting the event.
During the segment, he joked that Melania Trump had “a glow like an expectant widow.” He also made another remark referencing a meme previously shared by Donald Trump, joking about whether a “doctor” or “Jesus” was present at the event.
Trump and Melania React Strongly
Donald Trump responded on social media, calling the joke a “despicable call to violence” and demanding that ABC and its parent company The Walt Disney Company immediately fire Kimmel.
Hours earlier, Melania Trump had also criticised the comedian in a strong statement. She said his comments were not comedy but harmful and divisive. She accused him of spreading hate and questioned why the network continues to support him.
Timing Linked to Security Incident
The controversy grew even bigger because it came shortly after a shooting incident at the same dinner event in Washington, D.C. During that incident, the president, first lady, and other officials were evacuated by the United States Secret Service.
Although Melania had not publicly commented on the shooting earlier, this marked her first major statement following the event.
Trump later described the situation as “traumatic” for his wife, adding that anyone would feel scared in such circumstances.
White House and Political Response
Karoline Leavitt, the White House press secretary, criticised Kimmel’s remarks during a press briefing. She called them “completely deranged” and said such language can influence unstable individuals and lead to violence.
The incident has now become a political issue, with strong opinions from both sides about whether such jokes cross a line.
Free Speech Debate Intensifies
The controversy has put ABC and Disney in a difficult position. Critics say this situation will test how companies respond to pressure from political leaders.
Free speech advocates have raised concerns that taking action against Kimmel could set a dangerous example. At the same time, others believe media figures should be held accountable for sensitive comments.
Kimmel’s Past Controversies
This is not the first time Kimmel has faced backlash. Earlier, he was criticised for comments related to the death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
At that time, Brendan Carr from the Federal Communications Commission publicly pressured ABC to act. Some local stations even stopped airing Kimmel’s show temporarily.
However, after public support and criticism of censorship, the show was restored within a week.
Corporate Pressure and Leadership Test
The current situation now puts pressure on Disney’s leadership, especially new CEO Josh D’Amaro, who recently took over from Bob Iger.
How the company responds could influence future decisions about political content and free expression in media.
