A tragic crash caused major disruption in Lafayette, bringing traffic to a complete standstill during peak hours. The incident happened along one of the city’s busiest routes, creating long delays and concern among commuters.
Crash on I-10 During Peak Traffic
According to Lafayette Police Department, officers responded to a fatal crash on I-10 eastbound, just west of University Avenue. The accident occurred during a high-traffic period, which quickly led to heavy congestion across the area.
Traffic backups were reported almost immediately, affecting not only the interstate but also nearby roads.
Eastbound Lanes Were Shut Down
Authorities temporarily closed all eastbound lanes of I-10 from the Ambassador Caffery off-ramp to University Avenue while emergency crews worked at the scene. Vehicles were diverted away from the interstate, and drivers had to rely on alternate routes.
This caused traffic to spill over onto surrounding streets, making the situation even more difficult for commuters trying to navigate through the area.
Fatality Confirmed
Police confirmed that at least one person lost their life in the crash. However, details about how the accident happened, how many vehicles were involved, and the identity of the victim were not immediately released.
Later updates confirmed that all lanes have since reopened and the victim has been identified, though full details are still limited.
Investigation Ongoing
The Lafayette Police Traffic Unit is leading the investigation into the crash. Officers remained at the scene for several hours to examine evidence and understand what caused the accident.
Drivers Advised to Stay Alert
During the closure, officials urged drivers to avoid the area and remain patient as crews cleared the scene. Even after reopening, authorities are encouraging motorists to stay cautious while travelling through the corridor.
