A serious security incident at a major event in Washington, D.C., has led to multiple federal charges and an ongoing investigation. New evidence presented in court has added more detail to what authorities believe was a planned attack.
Suspect Remains in Custody
A 31-year-old man, Cole Allen, will remain in custody after a detention hearing. He is accused of carrying out a shooting during the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner held at a hotel in Washington, D.C.
Allen faces several serious charges, including attempted assassination of Donald Trump, along with firearm-related offences. He has not yet entered a plea in the case.
Video Evidence Presented
Prosecutors shared video footage that they say shows Allen scouting the hotel area a day before the event. The footage reportedly captures him walking through hallways and entering different parts of the building.
Additional clips from the night of the incident show a man running through a security checkpoint before the shooting took place. Authorities believe this supports their claim that the attack was planned in advance.
Details of the Shooting
During the incident, a U.S. Secret Service officer was shot but survived because the bullet hit a protective vest. Officials said the suspect used a shotgun and fired at least once while moving through the area.
According to authorities, the officer returned fire and helped stop the suspect. Law enforcement quickly intervened and took Allen into custody before he could reach the main event area.
Prosecution’s Claims
Jeanine Pirro stated that the evidence clearly shows the suspect fired at the officer. Prosecutors also said there is no indication that the shooting was accidental or caused by friendly fire.
They described the case as extremely serious, pointing to written material allegedly created by Allen that outlined plans to target high-level officials.
Defense Response
Allen’s legal team has questioned whether there is enough proof to confirm that he fired the weapon. They have raised doubts about the evidence presented so far, which will likely be a key part of the trial.
What Happens Next
Allen appeared in court wearing a jail uniform and did not speak during the hearing. His attorney confirmed that he will remain in custody for now. His next court appearance is scheduled for May 11.
Investigators are continuing to look into whether he had any additional targets or made threats to others.
