A 27-year-old man from Texas was sentenced to 50 years in prison for murder, but his courtroom outburst after hearing his sentence led to further charges. Jaquarius Lewis was sentenced on April 28, 2026, after pleading guilty to the April 2024 murder of Quincy Johnson. However, his response to the sentence quickly escalated, as he allegedly punched his court-appointed defense attorney, John Petruzzi, in the face.
Courtroom Outburst
The sentencing occurred after Lewis had pleaded guilty to the murder of 40-year-old Quincy Johnson, who was fatally shot on April 18, 2024.
Witnesses reported seeing Johnson on his balcony when two men walked by and shot him. Surveillance footage later confirmed that Lewis was the shooter, and charges were filed against him on May 6, 2024. Lewis had been facing a range of sentences from five to 50 years, and the judge opted to impose the maximum 50-year sentence based on the state’s recommendation.
After the sentence was handed down, witnesses claim Lewis became violent and allegedly punched his defense attorney, John Petruzzi, in the face. According to reports, Petruzzi fell backward in his chair, hit a counter, and then collapsed to the ground. In a statement after the incident, Petruzzi, who has extensive experience in the legal field, remarked, “I’ve done this a long time, and I’ve never had a client hit me before.”
The Murder of Quincy Johnson
The murder took place in mid-April 2024 when Quincy Johnson was standing on his balcony. According to the Houston Police Department, Lewis and another man were seen in surveillance footage walking past the building before the fatal shooting occurred.
The other individual present in the footage was questioned and later released without charges. Lewis, however, was identified as the shooter, and he was arrested shortly afterward.
New Charge for Attack on Attorney
In addition to the murder conviction, Jaquarius Lewis now faces an additional charge for allegedly injuring his defense attorney. The charge of injury to the elderly stems from the reported attack on Petruzzi.
