A 24-year-old man from Laplace, Louisiana, was arrested Wednesday night after fleeing a traffic stop, leaving his 2-year-old child alone in the vehicle.
Kyron Davis faces multiple charges, including possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, illegal carrying of a weapon with a controlled dangerous substance, resisting an officer by flight, and child desertion, according to the St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff’s Office.
The Incident and Fleeing from Deputies
The incident unfolded around 10:06 p.m. when a patrol deputy attempted to stop Davis for driving without headlights on Dominican Drive. Authorities said Davis passed a marked police unit without headlights, prompting the deputy to activate emergency lights.
Instead of stopping, Davis continued driving, made a U-turn at Dominican Drive and Carrollwood Drive, and began heading east, with the deputy following behind with sirens on.
Davis then turned onto Linda Lane, where he stopped the vehicle, exited, and initially walked backward toward the deputy. However, Davis refused to follow commands to get on the ground and ran away, jumping a fence and fleeing into the Riverlands Shopping Center. As the deputy returned to the vehicle, he discovered a 22-year-old woman—later identified as the child’s mother—holding the 2-year-old child in the back seat.
Child Desertion and Evidence Found
After Davis fled, deputies found a firearm and ammunition hidden under the driver’s seat of the vehicle. Dash camera footage later confirmed the mother removing the child from the car after Davis ran. Authorities say the woman, who lives nearby, was in the vehicle with the toddler when the incident occurred.
Davis’ Arrest and Charges
Davis was arrested shortly after 11:30 p.m. after deputies observed him entering another vehicle. No injuries were reported during the incident. In addition to the charges of fleeing and child desertion, Davis faces charges related to drug possession with intent to distribute and illegal firearm possession.
This disturbing incident highlights concerns about child safety in situations involving fleeing suspects, as Davis left his young child alone in the vehicle during a high-risk chase. The case is still under investigation as authorities review the circumstances surrounding the child’s safety and the charges against Davis.
