Chippewa County, WI — A 23-year-old Wisconsin man, Dayne Paulson, has been arrested and charged with repeated physical abuse of a child after his newborn son was found with severe injuries, including three skull fractures. Paulson is currently being held at the Chippewa County Jail.

Disturbing Discovery at Marshfield Hospital

The investigation began on April 25 when hospital staff at Marshfield Hospital contacted police about a potential child abuse case. A woman had brought her 27-day-old son to the hospital, reporting that he had a cut above his eye, a bruised eye, and an injury to his septum.

Upon further examination, doctors discovered numerous injuries on the newborn, including a skull fracture. The baby was immediately transferred to a pediatric intensive care unit for further treatment. Subsequent tests revealed three skull fractures, as well as fractures to his collarbone, leg, nose, and a rib.

Paulson’s Confession

After his arrest, Paulson allegedly told authorities that his son was “being dramatic” and “not liking his diaper changed.” However, during questioning on April 27, Paulson reportedly admitted that he had punched the baby in the eye and head-butted him repeatedly because the newborn wouldn’t settle down and stop crying.

Paulson also admitted to squeezing the baby so hard that he hurt his own ribs. When asked to demonstrate his actions, Paulson allegedly crushed a Kleenex box to show the force he used on his son.

Recovery and Long-Term Concerns

Doctors treating the baby have stated that while the infant has a good chance of recovery, it’s still too soon to determine if the child will experience permanent damage due to his young age.

Court Appearance and Bond

Paulson made his first court appearance on May 1, where his bond was increased from $50,000 cash to $200,000. He remains in custody at the Chippewa County Jail and is scheduled for further court appearances on May 3 and May 26.
