A small Massachusetts community is mourning the tragic loss of a young boy, Zakaria Bel Qaid, who died in a freak accident on May 4, 2026, at Winthrop Elementary School in Melrose. Zakaria, just nine years old, was playing on the playground when a tree unexpectedly fell onto the jungle gym, leading to serious injuries.
Although details of his injuries have not been fully disclosed, it was reported that he was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening wounds. Despite the efforts of emergency responders, Zakaria sadly passed away from his injuries the following day.
Tragic Accident at Winthrop Elementary School
The incident took place after school hours, when Zakaria was playing with his friends on the playground. According to the Melrose Fire Department, two children and one adult were injured when a tree fell from behind a fence onto the playground. The falling tree also destroyed a portion of the fence. While the conditions of the adult and one child were not life-threatening, Zakaria’s injuries were severe.
In an official statement, the Melrose mayor shared details about the emergency response. “This afternoon, Melrose Police and Fire Departments responded to a 911 call after school regarding a tree falling on a playground at the Winthrop Elementary School,” the mayor said. “As a result, two children and one adult were transported by ambulance to area hospitals.”
A parent, Robin Magnuson, spoke about the terrifying moments after the accident, describing how she learned about the incident through text messages from concerned mothers. “We happened to see the ambulance, and they were taking away the kid on stretchers,” she told WCVB.
Community Grieves the Loss of Zakaria
The following day, on May 5, 2026, it was announced with deep sorrow that Zakaria had passed away from his injuries. Melrose Public School Superintendent Cari Berman and Mayor Jennifer Grigoraitis released a joint statement expressing their condolences to the family and the community. “It is with great sadness that we share that the student who was seriously injured yesterday afternoon during the incident on the Winthrop School playground has died,” the statement read.
While Zakaria’s tragic passing has left the community in shock, the other two victims, one child and one adult, were reported to have non-life-threatening injuries and have since been discharged from the hospital.
The statement also addressed the support available to the community, particularly for students and staff. “Counseling services will be available for students and staff who need someone to talk to,” the statement noted. “Our deepest condolences go out to the family, and we ask that you please respect their privacy at this time.”
Zakaria’s Family Pays Tribute
Zakaria’s family shared a heartfelt tribute to him on social media. His family identified him as the boy who had been involved in the tragic accident. In an Instagram post made from an account that was created to promote Zakaria’s love for skiing, his family expressed their immense grief and sadness.
“It is with utmost sadness and grief that we announce the passing of our most beautiful boy, Zakaria,” the post began. “He was involved in a crazy and unbelievable accident on the playground at his school where a tree from a neighboring property broke and fell on him while he was playing on the play structure.”
The family shared that Zakaria spent his final moments laughing and playing tag with his little sister and her friend. “He had just celebrated his ninth birthday only a week before,” they added. “He was fun and incredibly loving, loyal, determined, confident, silly, stubborn, and the very best mama’s boy.”
Zakaria’s love for skiing was a defining part of his life, and his family expressed their gratitude for the joy he found in the sport. “He loved to ski so much – it was absolutely everything to him, and I’m so glad he had the best winter ever,” they shared.
In memory of Zakaria, his family has created a memorial fund. Donations to the fund will go to the Green Mountain Academy, a nonprofit snowboard and freeski training club in Stowe, Vermont, where Zakaria had hoped to continue developing his passion for skiing.
A Community Coming Together
The community of Melrose, along with many others who knew Zakaria, is coming together to remember the young boy whose life was cut tragically short. The Winthrop Elementary School is also honoring Zakaria’s memory, and counseling services have been offered to those affected by this devastating event.
Zakaria’s family, in their tribute, expressed gratitude for the love and support they have received from those who knew their son. “Thank you to everyone that loved him. This is an incomprehensible loss,” they wrote.
As the community continues to grieve, they are also reflecting on the precious and fragile nature of life, as well as the strength found in coming together during times of sorrow.
