Former New York Rangers player Ron Duguay, 68, has been diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer. In response to his ongoing medical battle, his family has set up a GoFundMe page to help cover the costs of his treatments and related expenses.
Duguay’s daughters, Shay Thomas and Amber Stavros, explained in the fundraiser’s description that their father, who is currently dating former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, would never normally ask for financial help. However, they decided to create the fundraiser after seeing the toll the illness has taken on him both physically and financially.
Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment Journey
Duguay shared with Page Six that his cancer originated in his colon, which led to the removal of both his appendix and gallbladder. He admitted that it has been difficult for him to ask for help, as he is typically the one who offers assistance to others.
“I find it extremely hard asking for funds for all these costs I’m going through,” Duguay said. “Normally, I’m helping others.”
The GoFundMe page outlines that the funds will be used for travel, treatments, holistic care, and potential new treatment options as Duguay continues his battle.
Financial Strain and Ongoing Treatment
According to the GoFundMe description, earlier in his treatment journey, Duguay’s care in Florida nearly cost him his life. As a result, he was moved to Orange County, California, where his daughters live, so he could receive treatment closer to home. The page mentions that Duguay now flies from Florida to Orange County every two weeks for ongoing treatment.
“The cost of constant travel, along with medical care, holistic therapies, supplements, and alternative healing approaches he has committed to, has become extremely overwhelming financially,” the GoFundMe post reads.
The description also notes that Duguay’s cancer numbers have started to rise again, prompting the search for additional treatment options, including potentially expensive treatments outside of the United States.
GoFundMe Success and Support
As of Wednesday afternoon, the GoFundMe campaign has raised over $54,000. The funds will be vital in helping Duguay and his family manage the escalating costs associated with his care and treatments.
Duguay’s Family and Personal Life
Duguay has two adult daughters, Shay Thomas and Amber Stavros, from his first marriage to Robin Bobo. He also has a son, Noah, 32, with his second wife, model Kim Alexis. On social media, Thomas recently posted a montage of clips showcasing her father throughout his treatment process, which also included some moments with his girlfriend, Sarah Palin.
Palin’s Comments on Duguay’s Health
Sarah Palin, who has spoken briefly about Duguay’s health issues in the past, addressed the situation during an April 2025 defamation retrial involving The New York Times. When reporters inquired about Duguay’s whereabouts, Palin said, “Oh, he’s battling a health issue right now, but otherwise very well.”
Duguay’s Hockey Career and Legacy
Ron Duguay had a successful 12-season career in the NHL, playing for several teams, including the New York Rangers, Detroit Red Wings, Los Angeles Kings, and Pittsburgh Penguins. During his career, he scored 274 goals and added 346 assists. After retiring from professional hockey, Duguay became a commentator, calling Rangers games on MSG Network for 12 years before his departure in 2018.
Duguay’s ongoing fight against cancer and the support from his family and fans reflect the deep admiration for his contributions both on and off the ice.
