A senseless act of violence in Grand Rapids, Michigan, has left two people dead—14-year-old Jeremiah Cuevas-Griffin and 39-year-old mother of eight, Savanah Villarreal—after a shooting incident on Tuesday evening.
Authorities report that the suspect, an 18-year-old man whose identity has not been released, allegedly opened fire after being denied entry into a pickup soccer game at Southwest Elementary School.
The Shooting Incident
According to the Grand Rapids Police Department, officers responded to reports of gunfire near the intersection of Oakland Ave SW and Rumsey Street SW at approximately 6:40 p.m. on Tuesday.
Upon arriving at the scene, first responders found the two victims suffering from life-threatening wounds. The teenager, Jeremiah Cuevas-Griffin, was pronounced dead at the scene, while Villarreal, who was rushed to a nearby hospital, later succumbed to her injuries.
The shooting took place near a school playground where a group of children and older juveniles had gathered to play soccer. Interim Police Chief Joe Trigg told local news outlets that the suspect had approached the group and asked to join the game. When the children declined, a verbal altercation ensued.
“Did not like the fact that he was turned away, so a verbal altercation started, which led to the suspect pulling out a firearm and shooting that juvenile,” Trigg explained. The adult female, Savanah Villarreal, stepped in to defend the 14-year-old, at which point she was also targeted.
A Mother’s Selflessness
Savanah Villarreal, a mother of eight, was reportedly supervising the children playing soccer at the time of the incident. Family members described her as a selfless and loving person who always looked out for the children, especially in light of previous verbal harassment incidents on the field. According to her sister, Angelita Tierrablanca, Villarreal “loved children” and was devoted to ensuring their safety.
The investigation has left the community shaken, particularly the seven or eight juveniles who witnessed the traumatic event. Local residents expressed their disbelief, with Donny Irving, a community member, stating, “You should be able to go to the park and play, and this is one of those senseless things that I have seen too many times.”
The Investigation
The suspect was taken into custody shortly after the shooting at a nearby residence, and while he has not been formally charged, authorities have stated that the investigation is ongoing. The Kent County Prosecutor’s Office has yet to authorize formal charges, but the teenager remains in custody on suspicion of murder.
Grand Rapids Public Schools closed both Southwest Elementary and Southwest Middle High School following the incident, offering staff and students time to process the violence that occurred so close to their schools.
Mourning and Community Support
The community is reeling from the tragic deaths of two individuals who were deeply loved by their families and friends. A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to help Villarreal’s family cover funeral expenses, and tributes continue to pour in from those who knew both victims.
As the investigation continues, the city remains united in grief, hoping for justice and seeking answers to the senseless violence that stole the lives of a teenager and a devoted mother.
