A disturbing murder case from Washington has shocked people across the United States after a man allegedly killed his wife and tried to make it appear as if a stranger had broken into their home. Authorities say Kyle Cathcart stabbed his wife, Jodi Cathcart, multiple times while their young children were inside the house.
Police later uncovered evidence that reportedly exposed the truth behind the crime. The heartbreaking incident has now become one of the most talked-about criminal investigations in King County.
Washington Man Charged in Wife’s Murder Case
Covington resident Kyle Cathcart is facing charges of first-degree murder along with a deadly weapon enhancement after the death of his wife, Jodi Cathcart. According to court records, Kyle called 911 on the morning of May 1 and claimed that an intruder had entered their home and attacked both him and his wife.
Investigators said Kyle told emergency responders that he had lost consciousness during the incident and could not explain exactly when the attacker left the home. When deputies arrived, they discovered Jodi dead in a bedroom and a bloody kitchen knife lying in the hallway. Kyle was also injured, but police described his wounds as minor and superficial. He was later taken to a hospital for treatment.
Kyle Cathcart Claimed a Hooded Intruder Attacked Them
After being released from the hospital, Kyle reportedly shared more details with investigators about the alleged attack. He said he was in the bathroom around 6:15 in the morning when he suddenly heard Jodi screaming his name. According to his statement, he rushed into the bedroom and saw a man wearing a dark hoodie attacking his wife with a chef’s knife from the kitchen.
Kyle claimed the intruder had his hood tightly pulled around his face and that only his blue eyes were visible. He also told police the man was similar in height and weight to him. According to the probable cause statement, Kyle said the attacker then turned toward him and lightly stabbed or “poked” him in the stomach, causing only superficial injuries.
Investigators said Kyle claimed he chased the suspect through the hallway because he feared for the safety of the couple’s children. He reportedly said he fought with the intruder, managed to grab the knife, and was later knocked unconscious after being slammed into the garage door. When he woke up, he claimed he immediately called 911 for help.
Ring Doorbell Footage Raised Serious Questions
The investigation reportedly changed direction after detectives reviewed footage from the family’s Ring doorbell camera. The video showed someone wearing dark clothing running out of the house around 6:49 a.m. However, investigators noticed that no footage showed anyone entering the home earlier that morning.
Police also found no signs of forced entry anywhere in the house. According to investigators, the garage door could have been opened by someone who already knew the access code or had access to a garage opener. This discovery raised suspicion about Kyle’s story.
During their search, investigators reportedly found black clothing thrown over a fence into a neighbour’s yard. Among the items was a black sweater with the words “Karate Mom” written on it, which friends and family identified as belonging to Jodi. Authorities also discovered cash worth more than $900 and Kyle’s truck key hidden inside the clothing pile.
Police believed the items were intentionally placed there to make the incident look like a robbery gone wrong.
Investigators Say Kyle Cathcart Confessed
According to court documents, detectives questioned Kyle again after discovering the hidden clothing and cash. During that conversation, investigators say he admitted to killing his wife and staging the crime scene.
Authorities claim Kyle confessed that he wore Jodi’s clothes during the attack and used a kitchen knife to stab her while she was asleep. Investigators said Jodi fought back before she eventually died from her injuries. Kyle allegedly admitted that he later attempted to hurt himself but failed because the knife was too dull.
Police also stated that Kyle purposely removed items from Jodi’s wallet and left the house to create the appearance of a robbery.
Investigators further revealed that Kyle had been lying to his wife about receiving a large lawsuit settlement. He reportedly told Jodi that the family was expecting around $6 million from a legal case, but later admitted that the story was false. According to authorities, Kyle said the pressure of losing his job and maintaining those lies became too much for him to handle.
Medical Examiner Revealed Brutal Injuries
The King County Medical Examiner later revealed the extent of Jodi Cathcart’s injuries. According to the report, she suffered around 18 injuries to her hands, 11 injuries to her arms, several wounds to her chest, and many additional cuts across her body. The report also confirmed that her jugular vein had been sliced.
Prosecutors described the crime as extremely violent and heartbreaking, especially because the couple’s young adopted children were only a short distance away during the attack. Court documents stated that Jodi’s screams could likely have been heard by the children inside the home.
Children Now Staying With Family Friends
Authorities confirmed that the couple’s adopted children, who are 7, 5, and 3 years old, are currently staying with close family friends. Officials have not released additional information about the children in order to protect their privacy during the ongoing investigation.
Friends and community members have continued to speak publicly about Jodi and the positive impact she had on others. Many described her as a caring mother who strongly supported foster and adoptive families.
Friends Remember Jodi as a Caring Mother
People close to Jodi Cathcart described her as someone who always brought positivity into the lives of others. Friends said she had a warm personality, a contagious laugh, and a deep passion for helping children in foster care and adoption communities.
One friend described Jodi as “a ball of light” who always encouraged people and made them feel supported. Her dedication to raising and caring for adopted children has touched many people in the local community.
This tragic case has deeply affected people across Washington and beyond. Investigators believe Kyle Cathcart carefully planned the killing and attempted to create a false robbery story to avoid suspicion. However, evidence from surveillance footage and the discovery of hidden clothing and cash reportedly helped police uncover what really happened inside the family home.
As the criminal case moves forward, many people continue mourning the loss of Jodi Cathcart, who is being remembered as a loving mother and a compassionate person who spent her life helping others and supporting children in need.
