Erica Smith-Katsanis, 53, is facing charges of vehicular homicide following a fatal crash that killed Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office (JPSO) Deputy Christopher Ohlmeyer. Court records from Orleans Parish reveal that Smith-Katsanis had 11 different drugs in her system at the time of the incident.
Smith-Katsanis Booked on Vehicular Homicide Charges
Smith-Katsanis was booked into the Orleans Justice Center on Wednesday, February 25, on charges of vehicular homicide. The tragic accident occurred late last month, leading to the death of 41-year-old Deputy Ohlmeyer, who was escorting a funeral procession when the crash took place.
Bond Hearing and Conditions Set by Magistrate
During a bond hearing on Thursday, February 26, Magistrate Commissioner Jay Daniels set Smith-Katsanis’ bond at $200,000. Additionally, Smith-Katsanis was prohibited from driving as part of her release conditions.
Drugs Found in Smith-Katsanis’ System
According to police reports, Smith-Katsanis had 11 different drugs in her system at the time of the crash. These included amphetamines, anti-depressants, and benzodiazepines. The presence of these drugs was a significant factor in the investigation, as they may have impaired her ability to operate her vehicle safely.
Legal Arguments in Court
Smith-Katsanis’ attorney, Brian Capitelli, argued in court that all the drugs found in her system were prescription medications. However, Orleans Parish Assistant District Attorney Abigail Macdonald countered, stating that it did not matter whether Smith-Katsanis had prescriptions for the medications—her actions still led to the fatal crash.
Fatal Crash Details
Deputy Ohlmeyer was escorting a funeral procession on Airline Highway near Mistletoe Street on January 30 when he was struck by Smith-Katsanis’ vehicle. Ohlmeyer, a 41-year-old JPSO motorcycle deputy, died as a result of the crash. Capitelli expressed condolences on behalf of his client for the loss of the JPSO deputy.
