A tragic incident in New Albany, Indiana, led to the death of 25-year-old Kaitlynn Lee, who was allegedly shot by her ex-boyfriend, Joshua Thompson, as she filmed a TikTok video. Thompson, 25, is facing multiple charges, including murder, following the fatal shooting that occurred in August 2024.
Joshua Thompson Faces Multiple Charges in Connection with Lee’s Death
Joshua Thompson has been charged with murder in the death of his ex-girlfriend, Kaitlynn Lee. In addition to the murder charge, he faces charges of criminal recklessness by shooting into a building, unlawfully carrying a firearm, and invasion of privacy for violating a protective order meant to prevent domestic violence. Thompson initially pleaded not guilty but is now requesting a change of plea hearing, scheduled for May 28, 2026.
The Fatal Shooting Caught on Camera
On August 10, 2024, at approximately 5 a.m., Thompson reportedly violated a protective order when he approached Lee’s friend’s apartment on Village Drive in New Albany. Lee was at the apartment with a friend and children present. At the time, Lee and her friend were filming a TikTok video, laughing and dancing to a song when Thompson stood outside the apartment window. Lee noticed him and asked, “What are you doing here?”
Thompson allegedly opened fire. In the video, smoke enters the frame, and a blast from the kitchen window is heard. Lee’s head jerks to the right, and her body falls out of view. The video ends shortly after, with smoke lingering in the room.
Thompson’s Confession and Troubled Relationship with Victim
After the shooting, Thompson reportedly called 911 and confessed to shooting Lee, explaining that he had gone to the apartment to see if she was with other men. Thompson admitted to watching Lee and her friend through the window before shooting her. The affidavit also reveals the toxic nature of their relationship, with both Thompson and Lee being “always at odds.”
Lee’s Family and Surviving Loved Ones
Kaitlynn Lee leaves behind three children, her mother, a brother, and other extended family members. Her obituary described her as a loving mother who will be deeply missed by those who knew her.
