A tragic and harrowing case in Alabama concluded with Ibraheem Yazeed being sentenced to life in prison for the kidnapping and murder of 19-year-old Aniah Blanchard. This case, which shocked the local community, is a grim reminder of the dangers of violent crime and the importance of justice.
The Kidnapping and Murder of Aniah Blanchard
On the evening of October 23, 2019, Aniah Blanchard, a college student, was at a gas station in Auburn, Alabama, when she encountered Ibraheem Yazeed. At around 11 p.m., Yazeed, who was at the store’s cash register, became fixated on Blanchard as she walked in.
After a brief moment, Yazeed followed her outside and waited for her to head toward her car. In a shocking turn, he jumped into her vehicle and forced her to drive away against her will.
At some point during the harrowing ordeal, Yazeed shot Blanchard. He then drove her car to an apartment complex in Montgomery, where he abandoned the vehicle. With the help of another man, Yazeed placed Blanchard’s body in the trunk of a different car, then drove to a wooded area in Macon County, where they disposed of her remains.
The Search for Blanchard and Discovery of Her Body
Blanchard’s family grew concerned when she failed to return home. Her roommate reported her missing, prompting a multi-agency search effort. A few days later, authorities found Blanchard’s vehicle with signs of a violent crime, including a significant amount of blood.
The case took a tragic turn when, nearly a month later, Blanchard’s remains were discovered in a wooded area in Macon County.
Yazeed was apprehended shortly after the discovery of Blanchard’s body. Despite several delays, his trial began in March, where he was found guilty of murder, felony murder, and kidnapping. He was sentenced to life in prison for his brutal crimes.
A Mother’s Statement and “Aniah’s Law”
Blanchard’s mother, Angela Harris, spoke publicly about her daughter’s strength, saying, “My daughter fought a very violent criminal, she fought hard and she got him off the streets so he could never hurt anybody again, and that feels good.” Harris also emphasized that her daughter’s death was not in vain, as it led to the passage of “Aniah’s Law.”
At the time of Blanchard’s murder, Yazeed was out on bond for another kidnapping and attempted murder. In response to the case, Alabama legislators enacted “Aniah’s Law,” which allows judges to deny bond for violent offenders, extending beyond just capital murder offenses.
