A 36-year-old man, Drew Babcock, has been arrested and charged with eight felony counts of domestic violence-related first-degree assault after his 3-month-old son was found to have more than 30 fractures throughout his body. The incident has shocked the community and led to serious criminal charges against Babcock.
Discovery of the Injuries
The injuries to the infant, referred to as J.B., were first discovered when his grandmother brought him to a doctor’s appointment to be treated for cold symptoms. During the examination, doctors noticed signs of severe abuse, and the baby was found to have more than 30 fractures across his body. Authorities were notified by the Division of Children, Youth, and Families about the injuries, and an investigation was launched.
Investigation and Arrest
After further investigation, detectives identified Drew Babcock as the alleged abuser. A warrant was issued for his arrest, and he was taken into custody on March 13. Prosecutor Melissa Farr shared details of Babcock’s confession, revealing that he admitted to squeezing his son in the chest area multiple times since he was a month old. Babcock reportedly did this because he lost control, as his son was colicky.
Farr also stated that Babcock admitted to punching J.B. in the back and using half of his strength to squeeze him two to three times a week. The baby is currently in the hospital for treatment of serious injuries, though doctors have stated that they are not life-threatening.
Defense Attorney’s Argument
Babcock’s defense attorney suggested that J.B. bruises easily and claimed that the infant did not receive a vitamin shot, which allegedly contributed to the bruising. However, this claim has not been supported by medical professionals, and the case continues to unfold.
Court Proceedings and Bail
A judge has ordered that Babcock be held without bail, and he is not allowed to have any contact with his son, J.B. The case is still under investigation, and further legal proceedings will determine the outcome.
