After a fatal shooting at a high school football game outside of Baton Rouge earlier this month, many schools have announced new stricter safety rules for athletic events. So far Riverside Academy is not one of them.
While Riverside Academy principal Holly Haase said safety is always a priority for students and visitors, she and other school officials are not planning to crack down on spectators at RA football games at this time.
“While we do not foresee the need to install metal detectors for everyone to enter through, we are looking at ways to secure our campus to ensure safety,” Haase said.
On September 1, a shooting at a football game between Port Allen and Brusly resulted in the death of a 16-year old boy and the wounding of two others. Since then St. James and St. Charles parishes and others have rewritten rules for spectators about what people are allowed to bring in and even who is allowed to attend games. Several schools have announced plans to have metal detectors at the entrances to games.
Haase said she does not foresee the need for such drastic measures at Riverside games — for now.
“As always, the best measure of protection is, if anyone sees something, to say something,” Haase said.
