A 50-year-old Louisiana woman was shot and killed during a gun attack at a Hammond gas station early Thursday morning in what police believe was a case of mistaken identity. Investigators say the victim was an innocent bystander who was never the intended target of the shooting.
Woman Killed in Early-Morning Gas Station Shooting
The deadly incident occurred around 1:15 a.m. on June 4 at a Chevron gas station located on Highway 190 West in Hammond, Louisiana.
According to the Hammond Police Department, officers responded to reports of multiple gunshots at the business and discovered a woman suffering from several gunshot wounds inside a parked vehicle.
The victim, identified by police only as Patricia, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities say the shooting has left investigators searching for multiple suspects who fled immediately after the attack.
Police Believe Victim Was Not the Intended Target
Investigators have stated that Patricia appears to have been a completely innocent victim.
According to Hammond Police Chief Edwin Bergeron, evidence suggests the gunmen may have mistaken the victim’s vehicle for another one they intended to target.
Police believe the suspects incorrectly identified the vehicle before opening fire.
Investigators say there is currently no evidence indicating that Patricia was personally connected to the suspects or the motive behind the shooting.
The mistaken identity theory has become a central focus of the investigation.
Surveillance Video Captures Deadly Ambush
Authorities say surveillance cameras at the Chevron recorded much of the incident.
According to investigators, a gray sedan was parked at one fuel pump while a white sedan stopped nearby at another pump.
Police say the footage shows two individuals dressed in dark clothing exiting the white vehicle from the passenger side doors.
Investigators allege that both suspects were armed with AR-style pistols before approaching and opening fire.
The attack was reportedly directed toward the rear passenger side of the gray sedan where Patricia was seated.
Dozens of Shots Fired During Attack
Police estimate that between 70 and 80 rounds were fired during the shooting.
According to investigators, the suspects continued firing as they returned to their vehicle before fleeing the scene.
Authorities say the white sedan then travelled westbound along Highway 190 toward Interstate 55.
The large number of shots fired has shocked both investigators and community members, highlighting the extreme violence involved in the attack.
Detectives are now carefully reviewing surveillance footage and other evidence to identify everyone involved.
Suspects’ Vehicle Linked to Mississippi Carjacking
Investigators have revealed that the white sedan used during the shooting may have been stolen during a carjacking in McComb, Mississippi, earlier in the week.
Authorities believe this connection could help investigators identify the suspects and establish their movements before arriving in Hammond.
Police currently suspect that two to three individuals may have participated in the crime.
Detectives are working with other law enforcement agencies as they continue tracing evidence connected to the stolen vehicle.
Community Shocked by Innocent Victim’s Death
The shooting has generated concern throughout Hammond and surrounding communities.
Residents have expressed shock over the fact that investigators believe the victim was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Authorities say the loss of an innocent life makes the case especially heartbreaking for family members and the wider community.
Police continue to stress that Patricia was not believed to be the intended target of the attack.
Police Request Public Assistance
Investigators are asking anyone who may have information about the shooting to come forward.
Authorities are particularly interested in hearing from individuals who may have witnessed suspicious activity near the Chevron station around the time of the shooting.
Police believe community assistance could play a crucial role in helping identify the suspects and bringing those responsible to justice.
Officials have also encouraged anyone with surveillance footage or relevant information to contact investigators.
Investigation Remains Active
At this stage, no arrests have been announced.
Detectives continue reviewing surveillance video, collecting evidence, and following leads connected to the suspects and the stolen vehicle.
Authorities say the investigation remains active as they work to determine exactly why the attack occurred and who was responsible.
The primary goal remains identifying and apprehending the individuals involved in the shooting.
