The Los Angeles Police Department has announced a sobriety checkpoint scheduled for Friday, April 3, at the intersection of Sawtelle and National boulevards.
The checkpoint will run from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. as part of a broader effort to reduce impaired driving across the city.
What Drivers Can Expect
Officers will stop vehicles to check for signs of impairment, including alcohol use and both legal and illegal drugs. These checkpoints are typically placed in areas identified through data on DUI-related crashes and arrests.
However, officials noted that the timing and location could change or be canceled depending on operational needs.
More Than Just Alcohol
Authorities emphasized that impaired driving isn’t limited to drinking. Certain prescription medications and even over-the-counter drugs can affect a driver’s ability to operate a vehicle safely.
They also reminded the public that while marijuana is legal in California, driving under its influence is still illegal.
Costly Consequences for Violations
A first-time DUI conviction in California can be expensive. Drivers may face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, along with a suspended license.
Funded Safety Effort
The checkpoint program is funded through a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, with support from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Officials say the goal is simple: reduce impaired driving and improve safety for everyone on the road.
